Why is My Aloe Plant Squishy? Understanding the Causes

Aloe vera plants are succulents known for their thick, fleshy leaves that store water. But if your aloe plant's leaves are beginning to feel soft and squishy, there are a few likely reasons why. The good news is, with proper care, you may be able to nurse your aloe plant back to health.

The Main Reason Of Aloe Plant Squishy is Overwatering

Overwatering is by far the most common reason aloe leaves become soggy and soft. Aloe plants have super thick leaves that help them store water, so they can tolerate drying out between waterings. But too much moisture, especially for prolonged periods, causes the root system to rot and leads to squishy aloe leaves.

Avoid Overwatering Aloe Going Forward

Water your aloe plant only when the top 1-2 inches of soil is dry. This may be as little as once every few weeks, depending on conditions. Feel the base of the plant; squishy aloe leaves indicate too much moisture. Whenever you do water, soak the soil thoroughly until water drains from the drainage holes.

Other Reasons Aloe Leaves May Become Squishy

  • Root rot from overly moist soil

  • Infection or virus

  • Temperature extremes

  • Underwatering (leaves may grow thin and translucent first)

  • Physical damage from pests, animals, or rough handling

By taking care of the root cause – most likely overwatering in this case – and providing your aloe with proper conditions going forward, there's a good chance you can revive even a rather squishy aloe plant. Just be patient and monitor any progress carefully. With the right amount of moisture, sunlight, and fresh soil, your aloe's thick leaves should plump back up in time.
